I’ve been asked several times by charities about whether they get a discount on Office 365 prices. They typically get a very good discount on normal purchased licenses so the standard pricing for Office 365 isn’t as attractive as it is for other organisations.
There isn’t much information publically available on this subject so I phoned my contact at Microsoft UK Online Services. The answer is that there is no official price yet but there is (a relatively labour-intensive) process to go through that enables charities to get a discount. It works something like this:
- A Microsoft Cloud Partner (e.g. Concentra) provides the charity with a form
- The charity fills in the form with basic organisation details, charity number and which Office 365 SKUs they’d like to purchase
- The form is sent to Microsoft in the US
- Microsoft needs to approve the application as a charity and then makes a price offer
- If happy, the charity signs up online for Office 365 in the normal way (and at the normal price)
- More paperwork in the background then applies the correct price, which will eventually be visible correctly in the Subscriptions section of Office 365 admin and any initial overcharge credited to their account
“But how much is the discount?” I hear you ask! MS UK is saying that the guideline discount is 50% for individual services like Exchange Online or Lync or 70% off for bundles e.g. Plan E1.
